What is Influenza (Flu) Influenza or flu is a common respiratory illness that affects millions of Canadians each year. In Canada, the flu season normally runs from November to April. The flu is caused by the highly contagious, influenza virus. The virus spreads through droplets tht have been coughed or sneezed into the air by someone who has the flu. You can get the virus by breathing in these droplets , or by the droplets landing directly on your eyes. The flu virus can also be on the hands of people with the virus or on surface that they have come into contact with. You can become infected if you shake their hand or touch contaminated surfaces, then touch your eyes, nose or mouth. The most effective way to protect yourself from the flu is to get a flu shot each year in the fall. After you have been vaccinated, your immune system produces antibodies against the strains of virus in the vaccine. The antibodies are effective for four to six months. When you are exposed to the flu virus, the antibodies will help to prevent infection or reduce the severity of the illness. Regular hand washing is another preventative measure. You will reduce the chance of becoming infected after touching contaminated surfaces. For more information on the Influenza virus, click here. |
