How is the West Nile Virus spread?

West Nile virus is spread to human from the bite of an infected mosquito. Mosquitoes contract the virus by biting  an infected bird.

The virus is not spread by person-to-person contact. There is some evidence that a person can be infected by handling an infected bird, but the risk is very low. If you have to handle a dead bird, wear gloves or use a thick plastic bag.

ATTENTION GARDENERS: If you are working outside, avoid early morning and evening. This is when mosquitoes are most active.
